World-renowned mountaineer Nirmal "Nims Dai" Purja is among 10 climbers missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak (8,047m) in Pakistan's Karakoram Range on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
📍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝: The avalanche hit around midday, cutting off all communication with the 10-member international expedition. The team included five Nepali climbers led by Nims Dai, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, Omani mountaineer Nadhira, American climber Mallory Geis, a Chinese climber (Mr. Wang), and one other foreign climber.
🚁 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬:
Search and rescue operations are underway, though bad weather initially grounded helicopters and forced ground search efforts.
Two bodies have been found at the avalanche site, but their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Tracking data reportedly showed movement from Purja's device after the avalanche, offering a glimmer of hope, though officials caution this doesn't confirm his condition.
🙏 Nims Dai is famous worldwide for completing all 14 of the world's 8,000m peaks in just over six months in 2019, and had recently climbed Gasherbrum II without supplemental oxygen — his 57th 8,000m summit — just nine days before the avalanche.
